Haridwar is where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the plains; Rishikesh, a little further up the valley, is the starting point for pilgrims heading on to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. This is a flexible plan — dates and stops can be adjusted to suit you.

Sightseeing in Delhi
A morning tour of Old and New Delhi: Red Fort, a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi's lanes, Gandhi Smriti, India Gate, the Presidential Palace, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar and the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Optional stop at Chandni Chowk's spice market. Overnight in Delhi.

Drive to Haridwar
Morning drive to Haridwar, considered one of the holiest towns in India — it's here that the Ganges leaves the Himalayas and begins its course across the plains. Har ki Pauri, the main ghat, is held to be the exact spot where the river enters the plains, and its evening Ganga Aarti draws pilgrims from across the country. Overnight in Haridwar.

Haridwar to Rishikesh
After breakfast, check out and visit local temples, ashrams and ghats in Haridwar before transferring to Rishikesh in the afternoon. Check in to your hotel, then take a half-day city tour, ending with the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan. Rishikesh is the gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage (Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri); the town itself is known for its ashrams and for the Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula suspension bridges over the Ganges. Overnight in Rishikesh.
